Alexander Kandabarow, MD Print E-mail

After graduating from Dartmouth College and completing pre-medical studies at Columbia University, Dr. Kandabarow received his doctor of medicine degree from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey (Rutgers). After completing his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he continued his training with a fellowship in Spine Surgery at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center and The Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Chicago. At Rush, he gained experience evaluating and treating not only common degenerative spine conditions as well as severe and complex spinal deformities. Dr. Kandabarow then returned to Pittsburgh where he served as Director of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital and as attending physician for the Spine Trauma Service and for the Spine Deformity Clinic at the Spina Bifida Center. As a faculty member of the Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, he educated both Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery residents. In August 2002 Dr. Kandabarow left Allegheny General Hospital to join The Orthopedic Group.

Dr. Kandabarow is an orthopaedic spine surgeon who evaluates and treats degenerative conditions of the spine including herniated discs of the neck and back, stenosis and scoliosis. Dr. Kandabarow also treats osteoporotic fractures of the spine with nonoperative and minimally invasive techniques. He strives to determine the correct diagnosis in order to plan a course of treatment for each patient. He encourages patients to understand their diagnosis so that they take a more active role in choosing their treatment. Most conditions can be treated non-surgically with physical therapy or injections. In addition, healthy lifestyle modifications often lead to a less painful back. However, natural aging of the spine over time may leave a patient with limited options other than surgery. If surgery is necessary, Dr. Kandabarow has extensive training and experience with various surgical techniques including minimally invasive and motion sparing procedures. He has been providing advanced spinal care to his patients for over 20 years, with outstanding results and a strong commitment to his patients.

Dr. Kandabarow cares for spinal problems including degenerative disc disease, fractures of the spine, stenosis, sprains and strains, as well as scoliosis. He performs surgeries, as well as scoliosis. He performs surgeries on the cervical, thoracic, and lumber spine which include fusions, discectomies, decompressions, minimally invasive procedures, spinal trauma, fusions with instrumentation, kyphoplasty, laparoscopic procedures and scoliosis procedures.
