Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Print E-mail

Did you know... Most people with Cubital Tunnel Syndrome have a habit of sleeping with either their elbows bent, their arms up by their head, or both.

Causes

Cubital tunnel Syndrome is caused by pressure on the ulnar nerve, which is one of the main nerves of the hand. Pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow can develop in several ways. The nerve is positioned right next to the bone and has very little padding. When the elbow is bent, the nerve may be stretched, and will begin to push against the bone.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Cubital tunnel Syndrome include:

  • Pain and swelling of the hand
  • Weakness or clumsiness of the hand
  • Tingling or numbness in the ring and small fingers
  • Elbow pain on the side of the arm next to the chest

Treatments

Symptoms may be relieved without surgery, particularly if tests show that the pressure on the nerve is minimal. A patient should avoid \placing the elbow on hard surfaces, and should consider wearing an elbow pad over the ulnar nerve and “funny bone." When symptoms are severe or do not improve, surgery may be needed to relieve the pressure.
