Golfer's Elbow Print E-mail

Did you know... The primary difference between Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow is the location of the pain and the activity that leads to injury.

Causes

Golfer's Elbow, or medial epicondylitis, is a form of tendinitis. The pain of Golfer's Elbow is usually located at the elbow joint on the inside of the arm. This injury can be caused by a single violent action, or, more commonly, a repetitive stress injury where an action is performed repeatedly and pain gradually develops. Golf Elbow is most common at the beginning of the golf season, or when the activity is increased in intensity or duration. Golf is one common cause of these symptoms, but many other sports and work-related activities can cause the problem.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include sharp pain at the elbow, especially when hands grasp an object or when the hand is bent. Patients do not usually experience numbness or tingling.

Treatments

Treatment rarely involves surgery, but may involve lifestyle modification, changing swing mechanics, anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, and stretching and exercise. A patient should speak with a physician to come up with the best plan of action for individual circumstances.
