Posterior Tibial Tendonitis Print E-mail

Did you know... The posterior tibial tendon holds up 30% of the arch.

Causes

The posterior tibial tendon starts in the calf and travels down to the inside of the arch. Posterior tibial tendonitis develops most commonly in those individuals with flat feet. The excess stress from the collapsing arch causes micro-tears in the tendon, and results in pain and inflammation.

Symptoms

Symptoms of posterior tibial tendonitis include:

  • Pain in the inside of the foot and ankle
  • Unsteady gait
  • Toes pointing outwards

Treatments

The most important treatment for individuals with flat feet and posterior tibial tendonitis is orthotics. Additional treatment focuses on resting the tendon to allow for healing; however, even normal walking may not adequately allow for the tendon to rest sufficiently. In these cases, the ankle must be immobilized to allow for sufficient rest.
