Stress Fracture Print E-mail

Did you know... A stress fracture is a break in a bone that is caused by repetitive stress.

Causes

Stress fractures in the foot are usually caused by overtraining or overuse. They can also be caused by repeated pounding or impact on a hard surface, such as running on concrete. A sudden increase of exercise is another cause of stress fractures, as is wearing improper footwear.

Symptoms

Symptoms of stress fractures include:

  • Pain over the top of the foot
  • Swelling
  • Pain that worsens after activity or during activities that require bending of the foot

Treatments

The best treatment for a stress fracture is rest. Taking a break from from a workout routine and participating in low impact exercise for a few weeks can help the bone heal. If rest is not taken, chronic problems can develop.
