Did you know... The two most common causes of tendonitis are lack of flexibility and overpronation.
Causes
Achilles tendonitis is the irritation and inflammation of the Achilles tendon in the back of the ankle. Achilles tendonitis is a common overuse injury that tends to occur in middle-aged and recreational athletes, especially runners. The overuse causes inflammation that can lead to pain and swelling.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis include:
- Pain over the back of the heel
- Significant pain after periods of inactivity
- Pain while participating in activities, such as when running or jumping.
Treatments
The best treatment of Achilles tendonitis is prevention. Stretching the Achilles tendon will help to maintain flexibility in the ankle joint. Items such as heel cups, arch supports, and custom orthotics can be used to correct for abnormalities such as overpronation and help prevent Achilles tendonitis.
Once achilles tendonitis occurs, however, treatment may include rest, ice, immobilization, and physical therapy. It is important to speak with a physician in order to plan the best course of treatment.
