Trigger Finger Print E-mail

Did you know... Trigger finger is more common in women than in men.

Causes

Trigger finger is caused by swelling and inflammation of the flexor tendons in the palm of the hand. People who suffer from diseases that change tissue, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or diabetes, may also develop trigger finger. Activities that involve prolonged and strenuous grasping seem to aggravate the condition.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Trigger Finger include:

  • Triggering, clicking, or locking of the finger when flexing and straightening it
  • Soreness in the base of the finger or thumb
  • Joint contraction or stiffening

Treatments

Initial treatment includes a cortisone injection around the inflamed tendon to reduce swelling. If the problem persists after a few injections, then surgery may be indicated to release the trigger finger.
