Volar Plate Avulsion Injury Print E-mail

Did you know... Volar Plate injuries are often referred to as a "jammed finger."

Causes

The Volar Plate is a very thick ligament that prevents hyperextension from occurring. If there is enough force during hyperextension, the Volar Plate may rupture. This results in a small piece of bone pulling off from the middle phalanx. Many injuries are seen in athletes, especially ball-handling sports.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms could include:

  • Significant swelling or deformity at the joint
  • Pain when the finger is resting
  • Inability to move the joint fully
  • Severe pain with range of motion of the finger

Treatments

Immobilization of the joint may be necessary for a short time period. After the first few days of immobilization, range of motion exercises will help prevent joint stiffness.
