Dislocation of the Knee Print E-mail

Did you know... Almost all knee dislocations require surgery.

Causes

Knee dislocations are very rare, are usually happen only after a traumatic injury, such as a car crash or a major fall. A knee dislocation is almost always accompanied by severe tears of the ligaments, and sometimes breaks in the bone.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a dislocated knee include:

  • Major pain
  • Deformed, crooked knee
  • Swollen knee
  • Numbness in the foot

Treatments

A patient with a dislocated knee should seek medical attention as soon as possible. In some cases, a dislocated knee will relocate on its own. However, in most cases, the doctor will move the lower leg back into position. In order to prevent further injury, the physician may place the knee joint in a splint.
