Did you know...Nicotine use can increase the odds of developing bicen tendon tears.
Causes
Bicep tendon tears are caused by either injury or overuse. Injuries may occur from falling on an outstretched arm, or lifting a heavy object. Overuse of the bicep tendon is a result of wearing down and fraying of the tendon slowly over time. As we age, repeating the same shoulder motions again and again may worsen the problem.
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Sudden pain in the upper arm
- Audible popping sound
- Cramping of the biceps muscle
- Bruising of the upper arm down toward the elbow
- Pain or tenderness at the shoulder and elbow
- Weakness in the shoulder and the elbow
- Difficulty turning the arm palm up or palm down
- Bulge in the upper arm above the elbow
Treatments
If the patient has not damaged a critical structure, such as the rotator cuff, nonsurgical treatment is a reasonable option. This can include: ice, anti-inflammatory medications, rest and physical therapy. In more serious cases, surgery may be required.
