Did you know... Women are more prone to calcium deposits than men.
Causes
Calcium deposits may appear in various parts of the body; most commonly, however, calcium deposits appear in the shoulder. Calciumn deposits are not harmful at the beginning, but in time, patients may experience some pain.
The cause of calcium deposits has not yet been identified. While an obvious answer may point to excess calcium intake from food and supplements, calcium is an important part of human health. Older patients and menopausal females must ingest at least 1000 mg of calcium a day from diet and supplements. Patients should not reduce calcium intake as a form of prevention.
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Pain around the affected area
- Soft deposits that eventually turn into bigger, harder deposits
Treatments
A physican may apply ice, and suggest resting the shoulder. A sling may be used to decrease mobility. Oral medications may help decrease pain, as well as cortisone injections. If the pain becomes too severe, surgery may be required.
