Shoulder Arthritis Print E-mail

Did you know... Three main types of arthritis may affect the shoulder: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Posttraumatic Arthritis.

Causes

Shoulder arthritis usually affects patients over 50 years of age, and many patients tend to have experienced shoulder injury in the past. The condition is more common in patients who have a history of prior shoulder injury. Shoulder arthritis tends to run in families.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of shoulder arthritis are:

  • Pain during activities
  • Limited range of motion
  • Stiff shoulder
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Grinding within the joint

Treatments

Not all treatments are appropriate for every patient, so people suffering from shoulder arthritis should see a physician to discuss the various options. Treatment may include limiting activity, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, and joint supplements. In more serious cases, shoulder surgery may be needed.
